  • Abyss's Review:
Behemoth really came into their own with their last studio album, Zos Kia Cultus, showing a maturity one would have been hard pressed to predict just a few years ago. Their evilution from underground darlings to widely respected death metal protagonists has been well deserved and well received. Their new album continues to secure their position at the top of the heap, surpassing their previous effort in terms of both songwriting and presentation.

    "One word review: Heresy!"

Demigod is a powerful album that demands your attention. It puts forth a crushing sound that is at once punishing and yet easy to listen to, resulting in anthem after anthem of blasphemy. The production captures the band's intensity without sounding polished, an accomplishment, I'm happy to say, that more and more bands are getting right. This band is at home with different tempos, brutal rhythms and fleeting melodies, making them a threat from all aspects of their sound.

This album has been out forever in Europe already, so there's probably not much you haven't heard about it. The bottom line is that Behemoth are one of the most exciting death metal acts out their right now, and have raised the bar for all of their contemporaries. This, alongside Vader's latest success and Decapitated's Nihility, show that Poland remains fertile ground for top-notch death metal. One word review: Heresy!

    Death's Review:
"Behemoth storm back with another majestically brutal death metal opus, and the results are pretty killer."
Behemoth storm back with another majestically brutal death metal opus, and the results are pretty killer. Combining the modern production style and guitar sound of later-era Morbid Angel, minus the experimentation and artiness, and amping up the focused and balanced metal attack, then spicing the formula with old-school Deicide level speed vocals and improved songwriting, Behemoth follow up their breakthrough last album with another assault at U.S. credibility and commercial success. The result is largely successful, and so if you are looking to jam on this kind of sound, a 2005 version of the traditional death metal of yesteryear, then look no further: you are sure to be psyched about spending your money on this album. The only thing keeping this from a full five skulls is that there's nothing too overly original or unique about it to put it over the top. But as pure extreme metal goes, this is great stuff. Catch Behemoth on their upcoming U.S. tour with Suffocation; you can just tell that there performances are going to be very cool just by listening to this release.

    Hel's Review:
Despite the corpse paint and cvlt spelling of “ov” in the song titles, these days I consider Behemoth to be more of a death metal band. Continuing still further from their original black metal roots, their newest effort Demigod has an undeniably dominant death metal tone. Though they initially came from the black metal scene, the simple fact is that they have since evolved beyond that and have continued to do so with Demigod.

"There certainly is a lot to like on this new album."

Regardless of the genre tag applied to them, Behemoth has once again delivered an album of impressive heft. With an assault that is nearly as pummeling on plastic as it is live, Behemoth continues to distinguish themselves as one of the strongest acts in the scene today. The songwriting is solid, the musicianship is impressive and the production is clear. There certainly is a lot to like on this new album.

So don’t let the corpse paint fool you. Demigod is an excellent example of impressive death metal with a little black around the edges. If you have not yet taken the time to discover Behemoth, this is your chance.
